Your details, in plain words
The Impact Digest keeps as little about you as it can. Reading the site needs no account and keeps nothing about you.
Who is responsible
The Impact Digest, an independent project, is responsible for the details you give us. Questions, or to ask what we hold about you: info@theimpactdigest.com.
If you create an account
- What we keep: your username; your email address; your password, stored only as a one-way scrambled form that nobody, us included, can read back; the date you joined and confirmed your email address; the countries you follow and the day you last looked at what changed for them; whether you voted for Pro and what you said you would use; and a log of the emails we sent you (when, which kind, and whether it was delivered to our email service).
- Why: to run your account and open the parts of the site it includes, and nothing else. We do not sell, share or rent your details, we show your email address to no one, and we send no advertising.
- Emails: only three kinds — one to confirm your email address, a welcome once it is confirmed, and a password reset link when you ask for one.
- Who else handles it: we use third-party service providers, only as needed to run the site: for hosting, for sending our emails and for our mailbox. They handle your details on our behalf and for no other purpose.
- How long: until you delete your account.
Changing and deleting
On your account page you can change your username and password, and delete your account: everything we keep about you goes at once.
Cookies
- reader — only if you create an account or sign in: keeps you signed in on this device for a year. It holds your email address, signed so it cannot be changed. Sign out removes it.
- rail — only if you switch between the paper and neon look: remembers your choice.

Fair use
To keep the site fast for everyone, we count the story pages and links each reader opens — per signed-in reader, or per internet (IP) address for others — for the current day only, in the server's memory. The count is not stored.
We also count, with no email address, IP address or cookie attached, how often each locked part of the site is opened, so we know what readers want next.
The news stories
We keep a link to each news story and our own tags — never the story's text, its headline or the outlet's name.
