Who we are

The Impact Digest is an independent project. Contact: info@theimpactdigest.com.

1. What The Impact Digest is

The Impact Digest ("we", "us") is an information and analysis service. It provides our own measures of how the world's news covers people being harmed, built from machine-readable records of news coverage, together with charts, maps, comparisons, summaries and links to the original stories on publishers' own sites. It is not news reporting, and it is not professional, financial, legal or safety advice.

2. Data, methodology and their limits

The service measures aspects of reported news coverage within its stated method. It does not claim to measure all events, how common or severe harm actually is, the experiences of all affected people, or the complete state of the world.

Data may be incomplete, delayed, misclassified, duplicated or attributed to the wrong place. We count stories that report people killed, injured or otherwise affected; we never print the number of people they report. Places, feelings read from language, and our other measures have limits of their own.

Country comparisons and feelings are measures of news coverage. They are not a judgement on any nation or its people, not a measure of what people there actually feel, and not a count of the total harm.

Comparisons over time can be affected by changes in the news our source monitors, in our method, in the data available or in how it is classified. A missing day, place or figure does not mean that nothing happened.

Before relying on an individual figure, or using the service for an important decision, read how to read the numbers and open the stories behind it. We do not promise that every figure, classification or reading is complete, accurate or right for your purpose.

3. Availability and our source

We read the news through the open record published by The GDELT Project. Whether this site is up is our responsibility; whether that record is complete, consistent or published at all is outside our control. Days our source does not fully cover are left blank and listed on About. We may pause, change or stop any part of the service, and we do not promise it will always be available or free of errors.

4. Using our work

Our counts, tags, measures, comparisons, charts, maps and writing are our own work. You may use, copy, share, adapt and republish anything this site makes available to you, for any purpose, including commercial use, free of charge, as long as you credit us clearly where you use it, for example:

The stories we link to belong to their publishers and open on their own sites, under their own terms; these terms give no rights in them. Collecting our pages or story links by automated means (scraping, bulk extraction) is not allowed without our written permission: it keeps the site fast for everyone. Ask us at info@theimpactdigest.com.

5. Accounts

A free account needs a username, an email address and a password. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what is done with your account. Choose a username that isn't offensive or pretending to be someone else — we may change or remove one that is. We email you only to confirm your email address, to welcome you and, when you ask, to reset your password. You can change your details, or delete your account and everything we keep about you, on your account page. What the free account includes may change. How we handle your details is on Privacy.

6. Your responsibility

The site and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available”, for general information only. You use any information, measure, chart, map or link from this site on your own responsibility, including any decision you base on it.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we accept no liability for any loss or damage of any kind — direct, indirect or consequential — arising from your use of, or reliance on, the site, its content or the stories it links to, or from errors, gaps or delays in the data, or the site being unavailable. Sites we link to are not ours, and we are not responsible for them.

Nothing in these terms limits any right or liability that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you.

7. Changes to these terms

We may change these terms and any condition of using this site at any time — including what the site offers, what is free or open to an account, and how our work may be reused — by publishing a new version here with a new date.
